A friend of mine on Facebook posted a status that was asking her fellow moms if its possible to ‘idolize’ their children. Meaning is it possible to do only things for them ALL the time.
This sparked a LONG thread of women coming together saying yes it is possible to idolize your children. So that got me thinking.. I commented saying yes I think that it is possible and I know some moms who do idolize their kids. The dangerous thing in doing so is loosing yourself. How many times do you see a Mom that doesn’t know which way is up because she is so wrapped up in what her kids are doing that she has lost herself and her ambitions, desires and her purpose on this planet. Many Moms can say that her purpose on this earth is to be a Mom, and while I feel that way too, I also feel that I was meant for bigger and greater things. No one on this planet is like me and I have a lot to offer outside of being a mom.
This goes back to that fine line between having that balance of who you are as a person and motherhood. Sometimes it can get cloudy or have a gray area. Motherhood is a gift and we let it define us. It is an important job because it is 24/7. But what about YOUR talents and dreams? Don’t they matter too?
One woman said that it is important to SHOW our kids by example how to contribute and go after our dreams. Your kids will follow what you do and not what you say. If you sit around watching soap operas and eating potato chips you will have a child that will do one of two things… Not respect you because you are lazy or end up being that same lazy person. I know because I have experienced it first hand.
Now this subject can spark a lot of controversy because we ALL want the best for our kids first and foremost. Having a healthy balance between your role in the family and what you are put here on this earth to do is tough! Not everyone has it all together! Lets try not to loose our identities. We all are unique and have great things to offer.
How does loosing yourself affect a marriage?! Ooooo thats a good topic for my next post. Stay tuned!
