I have been itching to travel somewhere in the next few months to somewhere warm, preferably Hawaii. 🙂 That being said that gave me the idea to give some tips for traveling for business with your kids and what has worked for me.
I LOVE to travel and have always wanted my son to get used to the idea of it. Now he is my little traveling buddy! I took him to Florida and Vegas all before he was a year old! During this time I was also nursing so you wonder how I did all of it? Well… I’ll tell ya!
1. Plan ahead! I have never been the most organized person but I really had to kick that into high gear when I was traveling with a baby. Map out how long you are there and what you need to bring. If you are flying, think of what you need on the plane. Also call the airline before hand to let them know that you will have your child/children with you. Most airlines are so helpful and want to make your experience as smooth as possible. Also make sure you know what stores are in the surrounding areas. When we were in Vegas, I knew where the Target and Whole Foods was and how I would get there if I needed to run and pick something up. It helped out a lot and gave me peace of mind. I even called the Target to make sure they had the items that I would need just in case. Whoa!! Who am I?? 🙂
2. Pick a prime travel time. I like to fly everywhere so I chose flight times that I knew my son would be ready to sleep. Both times we traveled with him, he was knocked out for the whole duration of the flight! If that means flying in a few hours earlier to give yourself some time to relax a bit before heading to meetings or events then do so. It makes for a smoother travel experience!
3. Pack light! When you are in your planning session of what you need to bring, make sure you keep in mind that you have to carry it around! Also, if you are flying keep in mind that you have a security check and you will have to fold up your stroller, check bottles, all in the midst of possibly having to stop to change a diaper! I packed my diaper bag and I also put items in a back pack. That made it easy for me to still carry what I needed to through the airport and I could also bring the back pack and diaper bag onto the plane. I used the back pack as my carry on.
4. Pack snacks for you and your little one. Depending on what airline you take, they may or may not offer you any type of snack. And some airlines now are even charging for water! So make sure that you have enough for you and your little one to snack on.
6.Don’t be afraid to ask for help! I personally was so afraid to travel the first time with my son. I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t want to have a bad experience. I also had some help with the whole travel experience. I went to Florida for business and couldn’t bring my son with me to meetings, so my sister came and watched him while I had business to tend to. It was great! If you can have someone come with you to help you do it! If you haven’t traveled yet, just get out there and do it! Once your little one is used to traveling, they will become pros!
Maybe I’ll be writing to you soon from the beaches in Hawaii.. until then Aloha!
