At the next Rockin Mompreneur event I will be discussing how to build your business using social media. Today’s post is equally important. If you are not using Social Media for your business you are missing out on a BIG piece of the pie!
If you do use social media to build your business what you put out on your profiles and says a lot about you. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ allow people from all over the world to connect with you.
Everything from your pictures, statuses and the pages you like, clients get a feel for who you are and what you are about even before talking to you.
Here are 5 ways social media could be hurting your business
1. Questionable photos
Your photos tell EVERYTHING about you! Clients will look at your photos before anything else. If you have some questionable photos like you tackling a beer bong at a frat party then the next day put up a picture of you at the office looking professional this sends a mixed message to your network. Be mindful of who are portraying on your profile. If you have questionable photos take them down NOW!
2. Boring status or posts
Your network will skim right over your posts if you are too boring. Stand out from the newsfeed with an eye catching photo or an amazing quote. A trick is to attach a picture with every status. This will draw in attention to what you have to say in your status.
3. Failing to reply to comments and tagged posts
If you don’t interact with your community they will forget all about you! Reply to most if not all comments and tagged posts/photos. Believe it or not people are wanting to hear from you. So interact with them online. If someone leaves you a comment under one of your posts and you don’t know what to say, just say “Thank You!”
4. Inconsistency
Promoting your business on social media takes consistency and commitment on a daily basis. If you are not seeing results using social media its probably because you aren’t being consistent enough.
5. Too much negativity
If every time you post it is something negative, people will not want to work with you and run away! I know that when I look at my newsfeed and see someone who is posting up constant negative status I block them from my feed. Isn’t there enough of that going on? Being positive will make you stand out and you will instantly become attractive in what you have to offer.
Social media one of the best platforms to build your business
If you use it right, social media will NOT hurt your business. Take these 5 points and revamp your profile and start seeing an increase in your productivity, your connections and your business!

Failing to reply is an issue for me, it is hard to keep up with all the social channels.

You always give such great advice! I try to steer away from all of these things, especially on my professional page. BUT, I definitely witness people who don’t abide by these rules!

I echo the negativity point. I understand sometimes things get rough but your business page is not the place to share. Plus it makes you look crazy.

Stephanie! I just found your site tonight and loved looking around. The reminder about consistency was especially useful – even if I’m blogging consistently, I have to be present socially! Plus, just learned about Facebook scheduler via the comments! Brilliant!

You are so right! Misery does love company! If you are positive out there it’s not normal anymore. Kinda sad!!

Good points Stephanie! I personally don’t like fan pages that focus too much on the drama in their life. I get the impression that they are intentionally seeking out engagement this way. It’s just tacky & unprofessional IMHO. Yet I’ve seen many bloggers resort to it. Misery loves company I suppose…..

See for me its opposite, I have a bigger reach on Facebook. But I have also built my network up. You could always re-post old material. You never know who it will reach the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time around! I also do more from my personal page than my fan page.
Stacy Harfert says
These are great tips Stephanie! I find photos don’t always get a very large reach, especially on Facebook. What do you think of re-posting the same picture maybe 6 months later to potentially reach other fans and followers?
