I was inspired by my almost sister in law to shoot a video in my closet to give Moms in business a HOW TO in putting together an outfit for conferences and networking events. I know you can relate when I say that my go to everyday kinda outfit is a t-shirt and stretchy pants LOL! Unfortunately it is not acceptable to wear that to business events. Dangit!
How To Put An Outfit Together For A Business Event
1. Be true to yourself.
Don’t be anyone else but YOU! If you like bold colors and prints, include that in your outfit. There is a way that you can include what you love without going overboard and still look like a million bucks. Include that pop of color in your accessories, your bag, or even the shoes!
2. Wear comfortable shoes for long days
My tip on this one is stay away from the dreaded tennis shoe with your business outfit. You can easily find a ballet flat that will go with a nice pair of jeans or even a black trouser. Your outfit will look more professional and put together without the sneaker!
3. Have that one staple item in your closet.. The Black Trouser
Invest in a nice black trouser as one of your go to items for your events. You can pair anything with it. Stay away from the black spandex pants though. I found my favorite pair at Express. Pair it with a nice heel or a flat and you are ready to rock.
How I was able to put together an outfit for my first speaking event.
For my speaking event I wore an awesome and completely comfortable one piece dress and paired it with a heel with color. The outfit itself was neutral but I wore a pop of color in my accessories. I literally felt like a million bucks in the outfit. In return, I was able to deliver my content more effectively.
This goes to show that what you wear truly has an impact on how you view yourself. When you go to events it is so important to look put together and in return you will feel GREAT about yourself! When you feel great the sky is the limit for what you can achieve! You will find that you will have a better experience because you aren’t worried about how you look or comparing yourself to others. I purchased the dress at Ross for $19.99 as well as the Calvin Klein shoes for $30. My accessories were from Charming Charlies (love that place!) for $13 and voila.. my outfit was born.
For each event it is not necessary to go out and buy an outfit every time, but having a few key items that you can pair with anything is crucial to your business attire!
You can have fun when you are putting your outfits together for events. It is ok to add some color and some prints to your outfit. I believe that the classic all black and boring outfits are soon becoming a thing of the past. Women and Moms in business can have fun dressing up when it is time to go network.
Can I also add that if you have a business suit that has shoulder pads in it.. go donate that piece to the thrift shop and buy a more updated suit! LOL!
In my video below I show you a few of my go to items from my closet!
I hope these tips help with putting together an outfit for your next business event!

Great tips, Steph! I really like the first one. Being I is the best way to ace any business events since I can fully express myself when I’m in a comfortable wear. Of course, I never leave without asking someone’s perspective so I can alter my attire it before the going out.

For sure! Them it takes some of the guess work of asking yourself “what to wear?” You have some go to items that you know you feel confident in! Thanks for your comment!!

Yes! Be yourself and wear what you like and what you are comfortable in! Then you won’t be thinking about it when you are networking. 🙂

Yes! Sometimes women feel that if I’m uncomfortable I must look good, but then we feel self conscious because we are uncomfortable. I’m all for comfy cute! LOL. Thanks for your comment Rachel!
Rachel @ Following In My Shoes says
The first tip is so true! If you wear something completely out of your comfort zone, you’ll be self-conscious and focus on that instead of relaxing and being able to focus on your speech/task/etc.

haha!! The stores have started carrying some really cute flats. Stock up on some of those and you should be good 🙂 Thanks for the comment Anne! XOXO

Shoulder pads are out? I’m SOOO behind on what’s in or out because I so rarely buy new clothes! lol But these are excellent tips. The shoes are crucial for me because I have bunions and one has gotten worse lately…. so flats or near flats are a must even more so now for me! I also love the video. Great job!
My tip would be find the colors/styles that flatter YOU. This goes along with your points about how you feel and if you feel great because you know you’re dressed in something that works FOR YOU, you will be more confident and feel even better. I have recently decided not to even purchase certain colors anymore because they just don’t work for me and when I see myself in them I don’t feel the best about myself. When doing business, you want everything to be working together towards your success! 🙂
